Choose the Best House Plan for You

Here are things to look for while designing your house plan:

  • Garage should be close to the kitchen so you have easy access when carrying groceries into the house. It makes garbage removal easier too.

  • Two-story houses generally cost less to build than one-story.

  • If you build a bedroom above the garage, be prepared for the noise generated by the large garage door.

  • Your house plan should include enough room for storage. Make sure there are plenty of closets in the bedrooms, large enough pantry, and closets for towels as well for the coats.

  • Plan traffic patterns. Observe where you spend most of your time and be sure your house plan takes this into account. Avoid putting obstacles in the way of major traffic flow.

  • Consider noise. You do not want to have a library or bedroom next to a playroom area where the TV or stereo unit is located.

  • Place dining room next to the kitchen so that you can avoid unnecessary steps while serving meals.

  • Include at least a half bath on the first floor when planning a two-story house.

  • Walk-in closets are a good addition to any floor plan. Be sure there is plenty of room for clothing and shoes.

  • Plan carefully on where to put the washer and dryer. Be sure there is enough room for large units as well as a generous folding area.

  • Do you want a basement? Be very careful in areas with high water tables as these can cause leaks.
